HOW THE GLITCH WORKS

What is the infinite AI glitch?

Not a trick, just maths: you don’t buy the Mac, you use it – and pay less than the Apple price for it. When new chips arrive, you simply switch after 24 months.

  1. Lease with Mac 75

Configure a Mac Studio or Mac mini and apply online. Over 24 months you pay 75% of the Apple price in instalments.

  2. 24 months of AI compute

Language models, images, transcription, code – locally on your Mac, your data stays in-house.

  3. Hand back, lease the newest Mac

After 24 months you return the Mac on the agreed terms and can take out a new lease – with the then-current chip and, if you like, more memory.

  4. Repeat. Again and again.

Every round is a new contract on the terms then applicable and with a new credit decision. As long as we offer Mac 75, you again pay just 75%.

Buying

100% of the Apple price up front. The Mac is yours – after 24 months with today’s chip.

The glitch

75% of the Apple price in 24 instalments, plus €75 net per order. Transfer of ownership is not included – instead, the newest Mac after 24 months.

And if you want to keep your Mac?

Still happy with your device? You can buy it at the market value applicable at that time. This purchase price is in addition to the lease payments already made.

CALCULATOR

What does a Mac Studio or Mac mini for AI cost to lease?

Choose model and configuration – we calculate with the current price from our shop, exactly like the lease configurator.

Model

The calculator needs JavaScript. The conditions are listed above, the prices in the shop and in the lease configurator.

WHICH MAC FOR WHICH AI

Which Mac is right for local AI?

For local AI, memory comes first: it decides how large a model can load at all. In our shop, Mac mini starts at 16 GB and Mac Studio goes up to 256 GB. After that, GPU cores and memory bandwidth decide the speed.

  • Local language models

Chat, write texts, summarise documents – with open models such as Llama, Mistral, Qwen or Gemma. Small models (7–8 billion parameters) already run with 16 GB, models with 70 billion parameters need 64 GB or more.

    Sensible from 16 GB

In our shop: Mac mini up to 64 GBMac Studio up to 256 GB

  • Image generation

Stable Diffusion or FLUX, for example with Draw Things or ComfyUI. You can start with 16 GB; more memory and GPU cores make large image models faster and more comfortable.

    Sensible from 16 GB

In our shop: Mac mini up to 64 GBMac Studio up to 256 GB

  • Speech to text

Whisper transcribes meetings, interviews and dictation locally, for example with whisper.cpp or apps built on it. That already runs briskly on a Mac mini; for many hours of audio, GPU cores matter.

    Sensible from 16 GB

In our shop: Mac mini up to 64 GBMac Studio up to 256 GB

  • Coding assistant

Code models with 14 to 32 billion parameters in your editor, without source code leaving the building. Plan room for model, editor and browser side by side.

    Sensible from 32 GB

In our shop: Mac mini up to 64 GBMac Studio up to 256 GB

  • Fine-tuning models

With MLX you can fine-tune language models on your own data (for example with LoRA). Training needs considerably more memory than just running a model.

    Sensible from 64 GB

In our shop: Mac mini up to 64 GBMac Studio up to 256 GB

  • AI server for the team

One Mac on the network serves models to everyone, for example with the local server in Ollama or LM Studio. Several users at once need more memory.

UNIFIED MEMORY

Why does unified memory matter so much for AI?

On Apple chips, the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine share one pool of memory. An AI model can therefore use a large part of the total memory – not just the memory on a graphics card.

On a PC with a separate graphics card, the model has to fit into the card’s own memory (VRAM) for full speed; consumer graphics cards usually have 8 to 32 GB. A Mac Studio with 256 GB loads models that would not fit on any single card of that kind.

For response speed, memory bandwidth matters most. On Apple chips it rises from the base chips through Pro and Max to Ultra.

MEMORY & MODEL SIZE

How much memory do I need for local AI models?

Rule of thumb: a language model needs about half a gigabyte per billion parameters with 4-bit quantisation, about one gigabyte with 8-bit – plus headroom for context, macOS and apps. An 8B model therefore runs with 16 GB, a 70B model needs 64 GB or more.

Guide values for each memory size available in our shop
Memory4-bit (typical)8-bit (higher precision)Available in
16 GB up to approx. 18B parameters up to approx. 9B parameters Mac mini
24 GB up to approx. 25B parameters up to approx. 14B parameters Mac mini
32 GB up to approx. 35B parameters up to approx. 18B parameters Mac mini
36 GB up to approx. 40B parameters up to approx. 20B parameters Mac Studio
48 GB up to approx. 55B parameters up to approx. 25B parameters Mac mini, Mac Studio
64 GB up to approx. 70B parameters up to approx. 35B parameters Mac mini, Mac Studio
96 GB up to approx. 110B parameters up to approx. 55B parameters Mac Studio
128 GB up to approx. 140B parameters up to approx. 70B parameters Mac Studio
256 GB up to approx. 290B parameters up to approx. 140B parameters Mac Studio

Rounded guide values for language models only: calculated with roughly 70% of memory for the model and a 20% allowance for context and runtime. By default, macOS gives the GPU only part of the unified memory; long contexts, several models at once or image models need more. No guarantee for any particular model.

SOFTWARE

Which software runs AI locally on a Mac?

When a model runs locally, your Mac processes prompts and documents itself – no cloud service. Handy for confidential data. These tools are widely used:

Ollama
Download and run language models with one command; provides a local API for other apps.
LM Studio
App with a user interface: find, download and chat with models; also uses MLX on the Mac.
MLX
Apple’s open-source machine learning framework for Apple chips – for running and fine-tuning models.
llama.cpp
Open-source foundation of many tools, with Metal acceleration on the Mac.
Draw Things · ComfyUI
Image generation with Stable Diffusion and FLUX – as a Mac app or as a node-based workshop.
whisper.cpp
Whisper speech recognition locally, accelerated with Metal on the Mac.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

FAQ on leasing a Mac for AI

Can I lease a Mac Studio for AI?

Yes – as a company or self-employed person in Germany. With Mac 75 you pay just 75% of the official Apple price for a Mac Studio or Mac mini in lease payments over 24 months, plus a one-off fee of €75 net per order. You apply online in the lease configurator; TARGO Leasing GmbH decides on the contract.

What does a Mac Studio cost to lease?

That depends on the configuration. Example with the lowest-priced Mac Studio in our shop (Apple price €2,520.17 net): with Mac 75 you pay 24 instalments of about €78.75 net – 75% of the Apple price in total – plus a one-off fee of €75 net per order. You can work out any other configuration in the calculator on this page.

What happens after 24 months?

You return the Mac on the agreed terms and can take out a new lease – for example for the then-newest Mac Studio or Mac mini. If you want to keep it, you can buy it at the market value applicable at that time; this purchase price is in addition to the lease payments already made.

Who can use Mac 75?

Companies and the self-employed in Germany, not private customers. Mac 75 applies from €1,500 net order value before discount, and 100% of the order value must be Macs. If a single Mac is below that, a second device or more configuration helps – or you lease it with 0% leasing.

Is leasing worth it for freelancers?

For many, yes: instead of paying the full purchase price at once, you spread 75% of the Apple price over 24 months and then carry on with current hardware. Freelancers are self-employed and can use Mac 75. If you want to keep your Mac for many years, buying is often the better choice. Ask your tax adviser how to treat the instalments for tax purposes.

How much memory do I need for Llama 70B?

A model with 70 billion parameters needs a little over 40 GB for the weights alone with 4-bit quantisation, plus headroom for context and system. With 64 GB of memory it runs, but tightly; with 96 GB or 128 GB comfortably. At 8-bit the weights are about 70 GB – then from 128 GB.

Mac mini or Mac Studio – which is better for AI?

The Mac mini is the affordable way in for smaller language models, transcription and coding assistants. The Mac Studio has the larger chips with more GPU cores, more memory bandwidth and the largest memory – for big language models, image generation and teams. What decides it is the model size you want to use.

Can I lease several Macs for my team?

Yes. Choose the quantity in the configurator; the fee of €75 net (€89.25 gross) is charged only once per order. From €1,500 net order value, Mac 75 applies to every Mac in the order, as long as the order consists of Macs only.

Does my data stay on the Mac with local AI?

When the model runs locally, the Mac processes prompts and documents itself, without a cloud service. Still check the settings of each app, for example whether it downloads models or updates from the internet or shares data.

Is my Mac reserved once I apply?

With your lease application you tell us your chosen configuration and your company details. We check availability and delivery date and submit the application to TARGO Leasing GmbH; the bank decides on the lease contract. The application alone does not yet reserve a device.
