Check firstOn iPhone, iPad, and current Macs, the storage is built in and encrypted: if the device no longer starts, the options are very limited.
Honest about the limitsFor encrypted drives, such as with FileVault, have your password or recovery key ready. You’ll enter it yourself if needed.
Write down which data matters most and where it was stored.

iCloud Drive
In the Files app under Recently Deleted. You can also restore recently deleted files on iCloud.com.
Mac
In the Trash and, if you’ve set it up, in your Time Machine backup.

Which data can be recovered depends on the storage device and the damage.

Honest about the limits.
Which data can be recovered depends on the storage device and the damage. Nobody can promise that in advance.
- On iPhone, iPad, and current Macs, the storage is built in and encrypted: if the device no longer starts, the options are very limited.
- On SSDs, deleted files often can’t be brought back.
That makes a regular backup all the more important. We’ll help you set one up.
